Meta Platforms Inc. is under scrutiny following allegations that it permitted businesses to deceive users through AI-generated advertisements. Over 60 individuals have reported encountering fraudulent ads on Facebook and Instagram, which falsely portrayed companies as UK-based family-run enterprises. These ads utilized fabricated images and narratives to attract customers, only to deliver cheap goods sourced from Asia.

The BBC's investigation identified several offending businesses, including C’est La Vie and Mabel & Daisy, which claimed local roots but operated from China and Hong Kong, respectively. Meta has since removed these entities from its platforms, asserting a zero-tolerance policy toward fraudulent activities. The company collaborates with Stop Scams UK to enhance user protection.

This incident highlights growing concerns over the misuse of AI in digital advertising, underscoring the need for stricter oversight and transparency measures. Meta's response will be closely watched as regulators and consumers demand accountability in the rapidly evolving digital marketplace.
